Inspiration ~ For A Midsummer Night’s Dream

A few weeks ago the lovely Melissa, of Melissa Woodland Cakes, gave me a sneak peek at a wedding design she had made for a photo shoot.  I was instantly smitten and she promised to share the images with me when they were ready for release… today I am delighted to be able to share them with you.  Such beautiful images, to convey this romantic comedy.  A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of my favourite Shakespeare plays, so I love that this styled shoot has encapsulated it’s romance and a little bit of humour too… I especially love the golden donkeys.  It’s inspired me so I’m off to plan a visit to The Globe!

It is my pleasure to hand over to Hannah McClune, of Hannah McClune Photography to explain the inspiration behind the shoot and of course to share her stunning images…

Hannah said:  “Midsummer Night’s Dream is such a romantic & magical story, it lends itself beautifully to being the central theme of a wedding!

The inspiration for this shoot was a contemporary take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream; they desired to capture the romance & whimsy of this classic love story but in a way that would appeal to today’s modern couples.

Our location was Pennyhill Park, a stunning 5-star hotel & spa in Bagshot, Surrey. This stunning wedding venue has several attractive rooms perfect for celebrations including a beautiful library suite. With its original fireplaces, classic wood panelling & shelves stacked with books it was the ideal backdrop for a Shakespearian inspired theme! The highlight of exclusive Surrey mansion has to be its outdoor terrace pavilion, which is licensed for civil ceremonies & partnerships.

Rachael from Serendipity Weddings helped to style & coordinate the shoot. Her brief was to incorporate the quirky features of the story in an elegant way so using a romantic colour palette of blush pink, pale green & gold accents, Rachael set about generating some subtle but whimsical ideas to bring the theme to life. Her brilliant styling included a drinks station complete with a ‘love potion’ punch, using sprigs of wild thyme in the place settings, order of services designed to look like Shakespearian scrolls & not forgetting the pair of small gold donkeys that all of us adored!

Cake Designer Melissa Woodland from Melissa Woodland Cakes, put together a playful and elegant trio of cakes, each incorporating elements of the theme. The main cake was layered tiers of blush, ivory and brushed gold leaf, separated by pretty co-ordinating David Austen roses provided by Tarnia Williams. The other cakes featured vintage style sugar buttons and pretty fairylike ruffles, all in the blush and gold palette.

Tarnia Williams of Flowers for Weddings provided the enchanting floral elements for the shoot. On receiving the brief she was instantly drawn to the pretty David Austin roses. The soft colours of ‘Kiera’, a brand spanking new variety, worked perfectly with the blush palette and oozed romance.

Tarnia added other varieties of roses and eustoma in complimentary tones for additional interest, and seed pods for texture. The coral berries worked as great highlights to the arrangements which included a dramatic candelabra centrepiece and a timeless teardrop bouquet.

The Sweet Stylist, Laura Atkinson, put together an elegant display of blush, gold and caramel-toned sweets to echo the colours used throughout the photo-shoot. Laura filled beautiful Bon Bon jars with classic vanilla fudge and strawberry cheesecakes as well as some charming woodland themed sweets including coconut toadstools and white chocolate mice, to tie in with the theme.

The Sweet Dessert Table, styled by The Sweet Stylist, the table incorporated a gilt sign evocative of the plays theme and a collection of vintage glassware to display the treats on offer, including gourmet marshmallows by Melissa Woodland Cakes. Miniature milk bottles were set on wood slice coasters and tiny gold glitter flags added a touch of sparkle.

Lisa Butler from Paperknots, designed a complete wedding stationery collection for the photoshoot.  It featured a stunning design of illustrative wild flowers, berries & leaves set within an enchanted forest. Lisa created a pretty monogram of the bride & groom’s initials which is used across the range to personalise it for each couple. The wedding invitation design which includes a save the date, RSVP & a pretty hand drawn map was tied with blush ribbon & accompanied by luxury textured envelopes & delicate patterned linings.

Jo from Tea & Doilies, provided the beautiful mismatched vintage crockery for the reception table. She also created a pretty feature of the pavilion by hanging vintage teacups with ribbon & added a number of Tarnia’s roses for a stunning backdrop.

The breath-taking wedding dresses in the shoot are from Stylish by Hollywood Dreams & were kindly provided by Helen Lord, owner of Wokingham bridal boutique, Borrowed Blue & Lace.

Our first model Megan, wore style CH030; a strapless chiffon bridal gown with a ruched bodice & a pretty tiered & layered waterfall effect a-line skirt. Her fingertip veil is ‘Jessamy’ by Rainbow Club.

Our second model Christie’s dress was style CH033 & featured all-over sequinned lace, an elegant sabrina neckline & a glamorous fish-tail train. She wore the stunning cathedral length ‘Starfire’ veil also by Rainbow Club.

Helen also lent us the pretty bridal shoes that you see in the images. They are by Hassall for Rainbow Club & the style is called ‘Blossom Time’.

Lastly, Charlotte of Charlotte Elizabeth, did an wonderful job on Megan & Christie’s make up with neutral but smoky eye-make up & a delicate wash of pink on the cheeks & lips. Charlotte enhanced Megan’s stunning natural curls with some simple fresh flowers and for Christie, created a playful fishtail plait tied with ribbon.”
