Is it really so important that the cake ribbon matches the chair sashes?… Cakes By Shelly – Day 3

Had a lovely morning, this morning delivering and setting up a wedding cake to one of my favourite venues – Woburn Sculpture Gallery. A gorgeous display of individually iced cakes with a matching top tier and an extra surprise cake for the groom.
Unfortunately the day took a rather sad turn when I returned home to an answerphone message from one of my brides who had called to inform me she had to cancel her wedding cake as her groom had passed away earlier in the week.
This sad news got me thinking to what is actually important in life?  As a wedding industry supplier I spend lots of time working with brides and grooms to ensure every little detail of their wedding is perfect. That the ribbon around the cake matches the colour of the chair cover sashes which match the colour of the bridesmaids dress. Sugar flowers match those used in the bridal bouquet and the table centre pieces. It’s so easy to get caught up in the excitement and momentum when planning a wedding that you lose track of the fundamental part of the day. While all these details seem so important in the build up to the big day it’s easy to forget the reason for the big day in the first place – the person you love.  Without them… there would be no big day x
Given such a heartbreaking diary account Ice the Cake would like to offer everyone a moment of reflection and will resume with Cakes By Shelly’s diary accounts tomorrow… time to go & give your loved ones an extra big hug 😦

‘A Week in the Life of…’ Cakes By Shelly – Day 1

So this week we are in for some delicious treats from our guest blogger Michelle Shulman from Cakes By Shelly

Who is Cakes by Shelly?
Cakes by Shelly is a small yet well established cake company based in Eaton Bray, Dunstable. Formed by Michelle Shulman in April 2006, Cakes by Shelly specialises in bespoke couture cakes for all occasions. Her love for baking and sugar craft skills has ensured her place as Bedfordshire’s leading cake designer.

Michelle’s passion for cake decorating began at an early age when she used to sit and watch her grandmother make wedding cakes and her mother make birthday cakes for her and her sister. When she had her own children the time had come for her to put everything she had learnt into practice. Her natural talent shone through leading to a flurry of orders from family and friends. With a gentle nudge in the right direction, Michelle turned her creativity into a career gaining on the way a City and Guilds qualification in Design for Craft and Sugar Decoration. More recently her designs have been awarded at the International Cake Craft Competition and the prestigious Salon Culinaire and Michelle herself was awarded the 2010 Self Employed Person of the Year Award by the Bedfordshire branch of the FSB for her business skills.

Cake’s by Shelly is run from Michelle’s home in Eaton Bray where she lives her husband and two daughters.

How do you come up with your designs/ what influences you?
I take inspiration from absolutely everything. Bridal fashion, flowers, wallpaper patterns, TV programmes….. the list is endless. I have a notebook with lots of random notes and sketches that would make no sense to anyone but have developed into some of my most popular designs. My clients are my main influence in everything I do. I encourage them to challenge me with new ideas and allow me to turn their imaginations into reality using cake.
What would you call your ‘style’?
My style is more modern and contemporary. I love keeping up with current trends and techniques.
What is currently your favourite design?
My current favourite is my Rivini cake – I love the impact it makes and will certainly catch the attention of anybody walking in the room.
Who inspires you?
If you could design a cake for anyone in the world who would it be and what would you create? I’ve already been fortunate enough to create a cake for my absolute idols (Take That) so if I had to choose someone else I would say The Queen. I would recreate my winning Ideal Home Jubilee design for her and the rest of the royals to enjoy at her jubilee party. I’d even create a special cake for the corgis.
What is your greatest achievement?
I think my greatest achievement to date has to be winning the Ideal Home Professional Cake Decorator of the Year, not only for the winning but being invited to take part alongside other such amazing cake decorators. It was a real boost to my confidence that they considered me to take part in the professional competition. ( I know that technically I am a professional but I don’t tend to really think about it!)
If you weren’t doing this job what do you think you would be doing?
If I wasn’t doing this job I would probably return to my former career in Foreign Exchange Management.
How do you spend your time when you are not working?
In the few minutes I spend not working or sleeping (bit over dramatic but sometimes it feels like that lol) I spend time with my family and friends. I love to socialize and cooking meals for everyone – apparently I’m a feeder!!
Do you have a current special offer for Ice the Cake readers?
